Human Detection Technology in Waste Sites
- Human form recognition: AI accurately detects people around the site, meaning much fewer false alerts and no alarm fatigue.
- Automated intervention: Safety Shield can automatically stop machinery or turn off hydraulics to prevent imminent collisions.
- Blind spot elimination: 360° IP69K cameras remove blind spots and maintain visibility, even in dusty, debris‑heavy waste sites.
- The digital thumbs up: An external LED “thumbs‑up” signal clearly indicates to pedestrians when it’s safe to approach and can immobilise the machine during the interaction.
- Behavioural insights: The Safety Shield HUB tracks near misses and creates heat maps to highlight high‑risk areas on site.
- Extreme durability: All Safety Shield hardware is built to withstand harsh landfill conditions.
- Remote oversight: Safety Shield Vue and our Safety Intelligence Platform let managers monitor site safety remotely via cloud-based web and mobile apps.
Human form recognition
With basic sensors, a traditional camera system is often too sensitive, triggering false alerts from vehicles or dumpsters that are simply nearby but not a hazard. The AI used in Safety Shield’s AI human form recognition system significantly reduces alarm fatigue caused by these false alerts, achieving 99.6% accuracy.
Automated intervention
In traditional alarm systems, they simply detect objects and alert you, without doing anything. With the Safety Shield, when there is extreme danger, the system can automatically turn off hydraulics or even stop a machine’s movement to prevent a collision that’s about to happen.
Blind spot elimination
With a standard machine, you have blind spots where you simply can’t see a passing pedestrian, visitor to the site, or other vehicle in this area. The Safety Shield system, on the other hand, has IP69K-rated cameras – that is, waterproof and dust-proof – that give you a 360-degree view of hazards around your work site. This works exceptionally well in waste facilities where debris and dust often obscure visibility.
The digital thumbs up
The Safety Shield features a unique digital thumbs-up sign. Traditionally, an operator would give a physical thumbs-up to passing pedestrians to signal they could approach their machinery safely. Whether they’re a visitor to the site or a colleague, a thumbs-up is an intuitive gesture that most people are familiar with and is even part of guidance and training. That’s why the Safety Shield system digitises this gesture with an illuminated external LED sign that nobody can miss. The operator simply presses an in-cab button to signal that it’s safe to pass. For extra safety, the system can even immobilise the machine during this interaction.
Behavioural insights
Of course, no safety system is 100% perfect. All safety products have problems and near misses. And the same is true of the Safety Shield system. That’s why they’ve also developed a Safety Shield HUB. The Safety Shield HUB lets managers track real-time near-miss data. This data can even generate heat maps to identify the highest-risk areas at your waste site or recycling facility.

Extreme durability
We mentioned earlier how the Safety Shield sports waterproof and dustproof IP69K cameras. The same is true of the entire range of Safety Shield equipment. All Safety Shield hardware is specifically designed for the harsh conditions of landfills or recovery facilities. Safety Shield hardware can even resist high-pressure washing and the heavy vibration that happens around waste work sites.
Remote oversight with Safety Shield Vue
The Safety Shield HUB isn’t the only tool in a manager’s arsenal. You can also invest in Safety Shield Vue. This is a cloud-based portal system that lets supervisors monitor site safety remotely, through web portals or mobile apps. You can know what is happening at any time, using your mobile device or even your phone, to radically improve behaviour and ensure your workforce and civilians alike are fully protected at all times.
Detect dangerous tilt angles
When your machines are trundling over a landfill or waste site, the surface can be lumpy, constantly changing and unpredictable. That’s why the Safety Shield system can be fitted with a tilt switch component. This component continually monitors the chassis angle of your machine to ensure it’s operating within a safe range. If the Safety Shield detects an unsafe angle, its tilt sensor will warn the machine operator, giving them a chance to address the danger and reposition their machine to a safer working platform.
These are just a few of the many ways the Safety Shield system keeps waste sites around the world safe. AI hazard detection systems are evolving fast, continually learning from real-world site conditions to improve awareness, accuracy and responsiveness. As more equipment becomes connected, each alert and data point contributes to a smarter and safer network that helps in predicting and preventing incidents before they occur.
